Au Plan K

Joy Division & Post Punk at la Raffinerie du Plan K, Brussels, 1979-2009

About the project

This book was born of a desire, a need. An urgency. To bring together in a book for collectors the photos of legendry groups in a legendary venue. Echo and the Bunnymen, A Certain Ratio, Eyeless in Gaza, Bauhaus and Birthday Party all played at the Plan K, as this was where underground music and culture was happening in the late seventies in Brussels. This is also, obviously, where Joy Division gave two unforgettable concerts in October 1979 and January 1980. The photos I took marked my career and travelled the world, like an echo of the tragic destiny of the man that was possessed. The abrupt death of Annik Honoré, the soul of concerts at the Plan K, pushed me to share these and many other photos with the memories of musicians, artists and other people that lived through moments of eternity there that still resonate to this day. Notably through this book…

So the idea is to finance the publication of a good-looking book(1) about the Plan K, the cult Brussels concert hall between 1979 and 1986.
The book will feature all the photos of Joy Division that I took during the two concerts, as well as several photos I took of each concert or performance that I attended(2).
What’s more, the book will be accompanied by the original iconic posters in addition to anecdotes from musicians, artists, employees and journalists(3) that frequented the venue.
I have been thinking about this project for 12 years, brooding over it and working it out in my head. It is now high time to release it, as a witness to this unique place, an amazing era and the key but underestimated role played by Annik Honoré.

It is worth noting that the book is already 95% finished. If this campaign is successful, production of the book can start immediately. So you won’t have to wait months to receive it.

The book will be fully bilingual ENG/FRA.

About the project owner

I have been a concert photographer since the mid-seventies, mostly for Belgian media, but I have also been published in in France, Italy, the Netherlands, the US, UK and on the web. I have also been featured in exhibitions and released several photo books notably about music, life in companies and travel. The passion for photography never left me, and I am still particularly drawn to capturing the emotion and madness of live performances. Today, I am still adding photos to the www.newwavephotos.com that I devote to my concert photos. But I would like to leave something more tangible than a site, to give body to these memories.
