The Women’s House of Ouled Merzoug

MOROCCO

About the project

Ouled Merzoug is a small village situated in the province of Ouarzazate. Its inhabitants take action to transform this rural context into a contemporary sustainable example. Previously, they have been building their educational infrastructure with local materials in a bioclimatic design. The preschool of Ouled Merzoug, was done together with BC architects & studies, and Goodplanet foundation :

In rural Morocco, the role of women is of major importance in ensuring the family’s survival. Empowering the women for a sustainable future is therefore the goal of the women's association of Ouled Merzoug.

The women’s house would allow them to organise literacy classes, exchange experiences, gain self-confidence and develop further their local crafts. Also, they will be able to transmit this education and these values to their children.

This Women's House is being designed through ongoing exchange between the community and students participating in the postgraduate "Building Beyond Borders" program at the Uhasselt School of Art and Architecture. In this exchange, all will invest time and effort in sustainable and ecological construction techniques using local resources. Students will have the opportunity to design and build a project with the local community in an immersive, life-changing experience.

About 350 women live in Ouled Merzoug, all hoping to see this project come true. They are organized in the ‘Women association of Ouled Merzoug’, which will ensure the operation of this House :
A centre for women, governed by women.

What are the funds for?

Your donations will be used to finance the entire construction of this Women's House !

Our Ulule campaign goal is set at €15,000 but we hope to arrive at €30,000 which is the total amount needed for this construction!

A first auction organized in 2017 by the Flemish Architecture Institute (VAI) raised €8,400 for this project.
In April 2018, BC architects & studies published « The act of building » on the 16th Architecture Biennale of Venice. This book tells how BC architects & studies engage in acts of building ; From the first fieldtrips for the design of a library in Burundi to involving over 150 workshop participants in the construction of a public building in Belgium. The sale of these books raised an extra €2,000.
