Son et Lumière: from Luther to Luther King

A history of the freedom of conscience

About the project

We believe that the liberty of conscience is part of the assets of humanity, to which protestantism contributed very originally.

In our world torn apart by religious fanatism, we believe that fighting to safeguard the liberty of conscience is particularly pertinent.

Through this Son et Lumière we want to tell a protestant story, showing how this strong conviction, very important for us, was built.

We want to do it in a way both entertaining and ambitious, spectacular and modern, intelligent and historically reliable.

These Son et Lumière performances will take place in the « Musée du Désert » in Mialet, in Gard, on July 28th, 29th and 30th 2017.

What are the funds for?

To splendidly illuminate these three performances.

The performance will gather more than 40 actors, 300 extras and numerous volunteers, all unpaid. It should welcome more than 1000 spectators each evening.

To bring to light a show like this one, it is not enough to have committed volunteers.Bringing to light a 800 m2 scenic space requires a high performance equipment implemented by qualified professionals.

Because we want to offer a setting of quality to this show in optimal security conditions.

During this show there will be a projection on big screens of pyrotechnics, a stake, a coach, horses, a car with front-wheel drive, hundreds of costumes of various periods, as well as a choir.

The potential profits will be handed over to the Association of the Friends of the Scout movement in the Cévennes ( AASC) to allow them to renovate a « mas » in the Cévennes given to the various scout federations.

About the project owner

AASC:

The Association of the Friends of the Scout Movement in the Cévennes ( AASC) was created in 1968 by a group of parents of scouts and scouts who wanted to organize a Son et Lumière show. The first show which was realized by this association took place in Concluses de Lussan, a particularly magnificent natural space.

The objective was an original way at the time to collect some money to meet the material needs for scout units (purchase of tents, and other logistics). But also the second objective was to make all the young scouts of the region participate and meet together( young ones and less young ones). Their parents were called to bring their help in the work generated by this activity. Around the Son et Lumière show a dynamics was built up, which motivated every one to pursue their commitment in the scout movement.

No fewer than 13 other Son et lumière followed in other places, all typical or steeped in history . The theme of the show being directly connected to the invested places.

At present, a young team (parents but also former scouts) constitutes this association and would like to take up with the traditions of the « elders » . That is why, leaning on the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, it seemed natural to set up a Son et Lumière show. All the organizers are volunteers. The scenario was written by 2 members of the association. The show will take place in a very famous place " le Musée du Désert " in Mialet. However, what was feasible more than 10years ago, is not possible any more for questions of security. Besides, this new project of Son et lumière aims at being equal to the celebrated anniversary, so our needs are much higher than previously.

All the profits generated by this association are used for the maintenance of a « mas » in the Cévennes scrubland typical of the Mediterranean landscape (it is isolated and without the usual conveniences, so the association strives to get it ready for occupation as much as possible) It is used by scout units for meetings and camps. This « mas » is also used as a unifier for the members of the association and the young generation that meet there.
