Goulash Disko Festival 2018

Global Underground Music Festival

About the project

Every year in september, Goulash Disko closes the European summer festival season in the middle of the Adriatic sea, where a big family of beautiful souls gathers to celebrate music from the Global Underground.

As well as being known as a legendary 5 days party, Goulash Disko is also a crowdfunded, 100% independant and sponsor free festival...a magical experience combining positive music, virgin nature and collective awesomeness.

This year the festival will happen from 12th to 16th september 2018, but will be extended with the traditional opening party on the Day 0, an extra Day+1 for those who don't want to leave Vis island, and before/after parties in Split and Zagreb. That means a full week of beach, sun, smiles and beautiful music, and we suggest you take enough time to enjoy all of it.

Goulash Disko takes place in Komiža, one of the most remote fisherman village in Croatia, and supposedly the sunniest spot in Europe. It is well known for its beaches, sunsets, lemons, domestic wine and laid back attitude…Just have a look at the video and pictures below to get a feel of the paradise we are in love with.

We work hand in hand with the village to grow Goulash Disko festival as a sustainable part of Komiža, which is why it remains a small scale, intimate and organic gathering. The festival is limited to 1000 visitors, and everyone taking part of it is expected to behave as proper Goulashian: with love, consciousness and respect.

What are the funds for?

We aim at raising 25000€, and all the money will be used to gather a stellar lineup and build the best possible infrastructure.  In terms of music, Goulash Disko knows no limits and we love to explore new sounds and genres rooted in the Global Underground. Expect world infused and eclectic music styles: Tropical Grooves, Oriental House, Gypsydelic, Voodoo Jazz, Swing Folk, Ethno Dub, Gypsy Punk, Organica, Latintronics, and everything in between...Beside music, performers and workshops of different kinds will spice up the program during the whole festival.

CHANNEL ONE (UK): One of the world's greatest and best known dub reggae sound system, run by legendary selector Mikey Dread, and featuring MC Ras Kayleb. A true institution touring for more than 30 years, and one of the main sound systems at Notting Hill Carnival.

GUTS (FR): Since hip hop broke into his life, somewhere in the 1980s, Guts has devoted it all his time and energy and became one of the main producer of the french hip hop scene. With time, he pushed his perpetual musical exploration to the electro-funk, the afro-disco, space jazz, tropical...His set will be eclectic, dynamic and highly danceable.

MOP MOP TRIO ft. ANTHONY JOSEPH (UK/IT): Whether you call it voodoo jazz or multiculti fusion, Mop Mop is one of the most interesting percussion based act in the current world-jazz scene. Mop Mop will perform as a trio, and will team up with trinidadian poet Anthony Joseph, who conjures echoes of Gil Scott Heron and Isaac Hayes.

CIGARRA (BR): Cigarra is a DJ, producer and label manager of Tropical Twista Records. She grew up in the dense underground scene of São Paulo, and participated in the effervescence of its parties and festivals as well as in the original formation of the renowned Voodoohop. Brazilian rhythms and from many distant parts of the world join in a contagious set of hypnotic and seductive frequencies, ranging from global bass to downtempo.

HABIBI FUNK (DE): Habibi Funk is a label dedicated to reissuing stereotype-busting sounds from the Arab world, and label owner / dj / digger Jannis Stürtz is coming to Goulash with his crate full of records.

KOGNITIF (FR): French producer focusing on trip-hop, abstract hip-hop and all sorts of *-hop beats. Regularly on tour with the likes of Wax Taylor, Chinese Man or Al'Tarba, Kognitif will represent the french trip hop scene at Goulash Disko Festival.

BWOY DE BHAJAN (DK): The promising producer has a penchant for World Music, but at the same time clearly influenced by Western electronica of the more experimental kind. Despite the drowsy groove of the music, this music has plenty of delicate touches, edgy beats, wonky bass lines and Eastern mystique to get lost in. He is only 20 years of age, but has already sent many crowds into deep hypnosis, and shared the stage with artists varying from Tokimonsta and Daedelus, to Omar Souleyman, Spoek Mathambo or Madlib. He was a nominee for 'Hope of the Year' at last year's Steppeulven (Critics) Awards in Denmark.

MR. RAOUL K (CIV): Being a refuge from the Ivory Coast, Mr. Raoul K. traveled to Germany in ’92 and became a professional football player, before a knee injury forced him to take a new carreer path. He got in touch with the aesthetic vibe of house & techno music, and spent many years taking double shifts, where he would work by day as a carpenter, and by night as a music producer.

THE FREEBORN BROTHERS (PL): The Freeborn Brothers is 5 piece folk band from Rzeszow, Poland, connecting live music performance with theatre and weird circus, insane gypsy dancing, psychobilly and country music. The musical brainchild of Johnny Cash, Gogol Bordello and Quentin Tarantino.

BARRIO LINDO (ARG): Producer, luthier and co-founder of Shika Shika Collective, Barrio Lindo is a well known name in the Southamerican new wave, and his work is an encounter between southamerican traditional music and downtempo electronics full of organic sounds.

MARTHA VAN STRAATEN (DE): Martha van Straaten is one of the most important German djane, performing every year in cult events such as Fusion, Garbicz and Nomade Festival. Her music is deep and encompassing, capable of transporting you through space and time with tribal sounds and new fusions of World Music. She will be part of Nomade Festival takeover at Goulash Disko.

THOMAS VON PARTY (CAN): Multi Culti leader and self-acclaimed “Loop-Guru”, Thomas Von Party has spent countless hours collecting and distributing grooves, working at Montreal landmark DNA Records, a decade running the titanic Turbo imprint, and opening his own mini-institution ‘Datcha’ which displays his wide-eyed view of ‘anything flows on the dance floor’.

DREEMS (AUS): Cosmic Sherpa. Liberator of Tantric Avatars. Sonic Skipper. Australian. Dreems’ hypnotic reveries strain and pulse against the restrictive meta-thongs of contemporary lifestyle living to offer a pan-globo soulstyle for our times.

KO SHIN MOON (FR): Whether Middle or Far East, Ko Shin Moon’s musical inspirations are coloured by scales and hues that the West is only just (re)discovering: Syrian and Lebanese dabke, the ritual dances of the Indian subcontinent, Thai pop, Egyptian belly dancing, Greek sirtaki, raï new beat and empirical samples.

JHON MONTOYA (COL): Jhon Montoya, is a Colombian violinist and composer, combining the academic path with electronic experimentation where he brings the scents of the Andean mountains within European views and at the same time collects harmonies from the folk tradition and tribal, inscribed in his DNA, to mix wisely with the European classical culture.

More artists will be announced soon! For more insights about Goulash Disko music styles, you can check our website to see the artists we invited so far, or press play below to listen some of the sets recorded at Goulash festivals and parties.

In total, we will book a minimum of 40 DJ's/Producers and 10 bands, coming from as many countries as possible.

If you want to apply as an artist, suggest an act for the lineup or get involved in some other way, please fill in this form:

Vis is a very remote island, but easily accessible since it has a good boat connection from Split. You can get to Split directly by plane (easiest option), but you can as well land in a nearby airport -Zadar, Dubrovnik or Zagreb-, then get to Split by bus or train. You can find about buses, trains, catamarans and ferry schedules here. When you arrive on Vis island, local bus or friendly locals will drive you to Komiža, located on the other side of the island.

In cooperation with the city of Komiža, we are setting up a temporary camping spot on a protected piece of land, shaded by pine trees and accessible by cars and camper vans. The camping will be open from September 11th to 18th, and in order to cover the costs of toilets, water and tourism tax, a participation of 200 HRK (30€) for the 7 days will be asked to all visitors. Camping tickets will be available separately after the crowdfunding campaign. If you are coming by car or camper van, you will have to pay an extra 15€ to the city of Komiža to park your vehicle in the camping zone during the festival.

There are plenty of accommodation options in the village, from basic rooms to luxury houses. Prices usually vary between 15 and 50€ per night per person. If you want to book private accommodation, we suggest checking out airbnb.com (search for Komiza); asking a local tourist agency to find something for you; or getting in touch directly with the apartment owners listed at the Komiža tourist office website.

And if you're up for a classy holiday, you may be interested in one of the charming flats of Villa Nonna -our favourite, see picture below!

About the project owner

Originally, we are 2 people behind Goulash Disko : Iva and Yves. We started the night 7 years ago in Dublin, where we lived at the time. After moving away from Ireland and settling in Croatia, we had the idea to organize the first ever crowdfunded music festival in the world, on this little paradise that we discovered many years ago. Luckily, it worked and the rest is history!

Since then, the community kept on growing and beside the festivals, Goulash Disko events have been independently organized in over 20 cities around Europe. Regular nights happen in Croatia and Slovenia, but you may also catch some Goulash action in Berlin, London, Paris or Vienna. Hundreds of artists are now part of the movement, and we couldn't be more delighted about it! If you want to see how the festival looked like in the last years, check out the gallery and previous aftermovie below!

If you like what you see, you can follow us on Facebook, Soundcloud or sign up to our newsletter. You may want to attend our Goulash Disko Festival Facebook event as well, to get the news while they're hot!
