Escape the City festival 2020

Eco, art, music & family gathering in Istria, Croatia

About the project

Dear friends and families

We have now reached the 3rd edition of Escape the City festival, our summer gathering for all families, sound system and nature lovers, slackline lovers, circus arts and performance fans from all over the world.
The festival will once again be held in the beautiful sea village of Barbariga from the 22nd-26th of July, located on the stunning Croatian peninsula characterized by shady forests and clear blue sea.

As any seasoned festivalgoer knows, organizing a festival is not a child's play.
We at Escape the City believe that in these few days on the beach, with our content and vision, we can at least try to present a different picture of the world and a way of life. In our time it’s pretty hard for an alternative “no mainstream” festival to find partners that will fully understand our needs, so to avoid meddling with major corporate sponsors and to keep our Escape the City as autonomous and free as possible, we must also rely on you for help!
So, we hereby invite all those who want to participate in the festival, to step into the Escape the City family and join us for this year's edition experiencing the best summer sound system event in the region.

Take 15 minutes and relax by viewing the 2019 edition of Escape the City in this beautiful aftermovie filmed and produced by the one and only Davor Jugovac

Covered by a pine shade in a forest just a step away from the sea you can expect 5 days of reggae, dub and sound system music played through handmade sound systems. We host international artists from all over the world. Besides the music you will be able to enjoy, educate and thrive yourself through several different workshops and lectures dealing with ecology, zero waste living, circus arts and performances, slack line shows and workshops, aerial silk performance and workshop, fire dance, organic cosmetics workshop, eco – printing and diving workshop into the beautiful Adriatic sea and of course a kids program made for our youngest.
Using recycled material from the surrounding areas there will be a chillout zone where people can relax, chat and enjoy the vibe. All our guests can have a great meal from our kitchen, cooked with fresh products sourced from local fruits & vegetables farmers.
We aim to provide only the best products for all the attendees, whilst keeping the prices reasonable.
Therefore, we are happy to provide one of the best craft beers and regional wine of the region that has the title of the "best malvazija wine" in the world.

What are the funds for?

It takes us approximately 4 weeks of work onsite to make it happen and at least 10 months of planning!
Our amazing location is a wood situated directly on the beach, the event production is not easy because we need to bring pretty much everything on location for those 5 days!
In order to bring high quality artists to Barbariga, we have to take into account paying their fees, buying flights or travelling by car couple of thousand miles to reach the paradisiac istrian peninsula.

Our minimum expense to make the festival run is 6000€ (not counting ANY artists fees, strictly infrastructure, electricity, workshops, materials, security, etc..)
All of the people involved in the core crew volunteer.
We obtained a little help from the city council so we put the minimum goal of our campaign to 2000€.
The better feedback we get more quality we bring to the festival: more workshops, artists  and better  infrastructure..

Funds will cover:

  • generator and fuel needed to run the whole content of the festival
  • security
  • artist fees
  • renting quality stretch tent to keep all the visitors safe also during the worst storms (let’s all hope that won’t happen!)
  • covers for kitchen area and the entrance
  • drinkable water for all the visitors
  • chemical bathrooms (yes, they are going to be cleaned every day - we know they are nobody's favorites, but if kept clean and with just a little bit of attention they can do serve us well for these 5 days)
  • different material for workshops (although we recycle a lot of stuff we still need to buy material to make constructions and things properly, reusable cups etc..)

Our idea is to book around 35 artist playing roots, reggae and dub music from all over Europe and host them for the first time on the Croatian coast.
Some of the artists we brought in the previous editions visited Croatia for the first time and had an amazing time playing sessions that are going be remembered for a long time.
To name a few artists: Gussie P ft. Errol Bellot, Kibir la Amlak, High Elements, RDH Hi-Fi, Rockers Dub Master, Resistence in Dub, New Era and many more regional and international artists.

For this year edition some of the artists we want to bring are the legendary sound system operator, selector and producer ABA SHANTI I straight from London UK, the great Sista Habesha from Italy ft. Saralene from Germany on the mic, one of the most innovative artists of the dub/dubstep world scene Egoless from Zagreb Croatia, the balkan veteran dub defender Digitron sound system bringing his 8 scoops, Lion’s Den from Germany, Haspar from France, local Munchies sound system full sound and the best producers of the balkan region: Jah Forcefield from BIH, Dr. Obi ft. Anja G, Boombar DubHomegrown sound and Dubar Sound from Croatia.
Once we have your feedback from the campaign more fantastic artists will be announced.

In the past editions we offered different workshops collaborating with local associations dealing with slackline, circus, aerial silks, fire show, sea-diving, ecology lectures, recycling, sound system equipment workshops, DIY music equipment etc.. That had an important impact on the families and children making this festival a place where all generations can have fun and learn something. There is a kids area and different workshops for them. To run all these activities there is a big effort by all the participants and by us, the production team.
As we said, the better feedback we get from you people the richer program we will bring you to Barbariga.

About the project owner

We are Sub Movements association from Pula, formed in 2018 but active since 2014 in different festivals and projects around the Balkan region. We are a group of activists and volunteers who have in common the passion for nature and sound system culture. That’s why in spring 2018 we decided to start our own summer gathering in the amazing location of Barbariga.

We all grew up with great festivals like Seasplash and Outlook, which have moved from our region to the southern part of Croatia. After that we felt the need to continue spreading reggae music and sound system culture, but in a different way, offering content for all generations.
How we did that? We connected with different local associations that promote circus arts, cinema, slackline, ecology and diving, promoting their work and allowing the visitors to try experiences they don’t have the chance to face every day.

The first edition was a “one day - one night” with all the family musical crews in August 2018.
Last year we decided to make a 5 day gathering where we brought some important artists we mentioned above in the text.
It was a big lesson and a big experience for us, this year we consider ourselves smarter and we keen to improve the festival, a lot.

Other projects we are working at since our beginning are “Dub Arena”, monthly event dedicated to promotion of sound system culture in Pula and “Kino Katarina”, summer open air cinema.

Follow our Facebook page and event for all the news if you want to be the first to be informed about what we are cooking in the ETC family!
