Forgotten Activism

A Gian Maria Volonté’s political portrait

About the project

Forgotten Activism - A Gian Maria Volonté’s political portrait is a feature film, devised and directed by Patrizio Partino and co-produced by Zi&Pa Pictures and Archivio Audiovisivo del Movimento Operaio e Democratico. The documentary film contains various interviews to some italian cinema figures, trade union members and political activists.

PLOT:

Volonté, the militant. Only a handful of people are aware of Volonté’s political activism. Forgotten Activism is an attempt to retrace and tell this aspect of the great actor’s life: his political commitment, sometimes devoid of mediation, and his strong political alignment.

WHO WAS GIAN MARIA VOLONTÉ:
As a big representative of italian and international cinema, he worked for Sergio Leone, Jean-Luc Godard, Mario Monicelli, Marco Bellocchio, Paolo and Vittorio Taviani and many others, leaving us many performances (including the one in Elio Petri’s Indagine su un cittadino al di sopra di ogni sospetto, that delivered an Oscar Prize to Italy).
Winner of several awards, including Cannes’ Prix d’interprétation masculine, Berlin’s Silver Bear, Donatello’s David, Nastro d’Argento and Globo d'Oro as a leading actor.
Awarded with the Golden Lion lifetime achievement award at Venice’s festival in 1991, Volonté departed prematurely on Theo Angelopoulos’s movie set during the shooting of Lo sguardo di Ulisse, where he was acting on the side of Harvey Keitel.

WHY THE TITLE FORGOTTEN ACTIVISM:

A documentary film was dedicated to his career and his work as an actor (Un attore contro: Gian Maria Volonté by Ferruccio Marotti), and another documentary already covered his private life (Indagine su un cittadino di nome Volonté by Andrea Bettinetti).

Forgotten Activism tries to look into his relentless political commitment, which somehow in Italy was never considered as a priority. Volonté as a model of inspiration: a rediscovery of values and approaches lost nowadays, that despite everything still appear to be necessary and vital.

WHY SHOULD YOU HELP US:

“I hope that a lot of people, just as I do, will recognize Volonté’s uniqueness in his field, looking at the same time at him as a perfect role model. After 20 years since his demise, I thought it was mandatory to remember him, his uniqueness and his conduct. Scalzone, Maselli, Angeli, AAMOD’s documents and many others are helping me decipher his model. A financial support, as what we are asking in this crowdfunding, will help us achieve this research journey, giving us a complete picture of him, for a more comprehensive view.”

About the project owner

In october 2016, Patrizio Partino was selected for the first edition of Zavattini’s Price, an important contest about creative filming sponsored by Archivio Audiovisivo del Movimento Operaio e Democratico. Partino submitted a draft for a documentary short film about Gian Maria Volonté, realized using archivio’s material about the actor. His project won a prize offered by Cineteca Sarda, and Partino was awarded directly by Antonello Zanda (cineteca’s president) and Giovanna Gravina Volonté (Gian Maria’s daughter) at Teatro Palladium in january 2017. Forgotten Activism represents the natural evolution to a feature film, from that original short project.
