The Debian Administrator's Handbook

Debian Squeeze from discovery to mastery

  • Liberate the French Debian Handbook

about 18 months ago, you contributed to the birth of the Debian Administrator's Handbook by funding its translation from the French book “Cahier de l'Admin Debian” (published by Eyrolles). With your help, we also managed to publish it under a free license so that it could find its way into Debian proper.

Having done that, we were left in the odd situation where we had a free translation of a proprietary book. Now, together with Eyrolles, we have setup a new project to liberate the original book in French and contribute it back to the Debian Administrator's Handbook as the official French translation.

The Debian Administrator's Handbook wouldn't exist without the original book… so it's extremely important for me that we manage to complete this project and ensure a bright future to the French book under a free software license (GPL-2+ / CC-BY-SA 3.0 just like the English book).

Please consider supporting the project. If you don't read French, you might not be interested by the rewards (except the Debian sticker!), but at least you can be sure that you will have contributed to make me happy! This last step is an important one for me, I count on you.

    Now head over here: http://www.ulule.com/liberation-cahier-admin-debian/

Thank you again for your support!

  • The Debian Administrator's Handbook is now available

Thanks to your support the Debian Administrator's Handbook is now freely available on its website.

    Get the book at http://debian-handbook.info/get/

I will now shortly proceed with the sending of the paperbacks to those who opted for this reward. If you changed address since the fundraising, please get in touch with me at [email protected].

    Cheers, Raphaël Hertzog.

  • Liberation Campaign Continues on Debian-Handbook.info

The crowfunding campaign on Ulule ended on November 28th. With 673 supporters, we raised 24345 EUR. Of those, 14935 EUR have been put in the liberation fund and the rest corresponds to the various pre-orders and rewards offered.

This means that the translation will happen (we just started) but that the book is currently not going to be released under a free license. Don't despair... As planned, the liberation campaign is carried on until the 25 K€ target is reached!

Instead of being hosted on Ulule, this permanent campaign is on the project website at debian-handbook.info/liberation/. Note that any contribution of 10 EUR or more means that you get a copy of the ebook as soon as it's available (even if the liberation target is not reached).

If you have friends that were late to participate in the Ulule campaign, please point them to this ongoing liberation campaign. Thank you!

  • Sample Chapter Released

    Hello everybody,

To give you a small preview of the book's content, we released the translation of chapter 6 which introduces the APT family of tools (apt-get, aptitude, etc.).

Click here to download the chapter.

Check it out and share it widely. The more people who discover and appreciate this extract, the more people who are likely to contribute to the liberation of the book. We're only at 40% of the liberation fund, and we have less than 2 weeks until the finish line! Your help is now more important than ever.

    Thank you in advance!

  • Contribute to the liberation without spending more money
