Playing cards CulturePedia

Play, learn and connect to your culture and identity

About the project

CULTUREPEDIA Cards is a collection of playful, creative and educational CARD GAMES to perpetuate and transmit African cultural heritage.

The NDOP, OBOM and TOGHU collections, inspired by the cultural diversity of the multiple tribes of CAMEROON, are the first creations of a series of customized card games with a cultural character.

The card pack contains a total of 55 cards : 1 explanatory card, which presents the history of the African fabric used in the background of the cards, and 54 standard cards used for the game. The contents of the game cards are very special. All known figurines of classic card games have been removed, and replaced by African cultural images and symbols, and explanatory and descriptive texts.

The disappearance of intangible cultural heritage is a real scourge on the African continent.  Over the years, the need to transmit cultural heritage to the younger generation, to connect with its origins and to re-appropriate its cultural identity is increasingly expressed in the African community, and in its diaspora in particular. However, the means and support to meet these needs are not sufficient.

CULTUREPEDIA offers a fun and innovative way to meet this need.  The Game being the best way to learn, this first collection of CARD games will allow an immersion in the richness of African culture. It also highlights all the splendour of African fabrics, the true cultural heritage of the continent. Three collections to serve you: NDOP, OBOM and TOGHU, all inspired by the Fang-Béti and Grassfields peoples in Cameroon.

Beyond the attractive graphic design of these cards, key information on the multiple cultural symbols of the traditions is represented. From the peace tree to the skin of the panther, the bark of trees, the kola or jujubes, playing these collections of games will plunge you into the heart of ancestral traditions, with explanations.  Also, a detailed meaning of the different symbols present on the fabrics used is presented on these cards.

A major asset of this game collection is the inclusion of two languages. The game is bilingual, English and French, therefore accessible to the majority.

What are the funds for?

This game collection is aimed not only at culture enthusiasts, collectors and players from all over the world, but also at the entire African community in search of cultural identity.

It will allow you to learn while having fun, finding the right balance between moments of entertainment and the function of transmitting cultural knowledge. Between the OBOM Collection of the great Fang BETI group, the NDOP Collection of the Grassfields people and the TOGHU Collection of the population of the North-West and South-West of Cameroon, an inestimable wealth and cultural symbols will deliver you all their secrets.

The reasons why we need you for this project ?

The funding, which represents your pre-order of the cards, will be used for :

  • to carry out the work of researching and documenting correct information on African cultural heritage.  This information is printed on the cards.
  • the design of the game (graphic creations of the cards).
  • the logistics
  • the printing of cards
  • the german VAT 16%
  • the ULULE fees 8%

About the project owner

About the creator of this game collection :

Patrick KEMDEM, passionate about cultures and traditions, mainly the intangible cultural heritage of Africa.  Concerned by the safeguarding of this heritage which is gradually disappearing over the years, the idea of associating all this knowledge with board games seemed to me to be an excellent solution, to perpetuate all this heritage, and to transmit it in a playful way, from one generation to another.

For a legal framework of the project, a name CULTUREPEDIA and the dedicated E-Commerce platform www.culturepedia.store have been set up.

The realisation of this project obviously requires key human resources, to whom I would like to express my thanks and encouragement :

  • ROSSIF FETCHEPING, polytechnicien engineer, web- and graphic designer, who realizes the graphic creation of the games.
  • STEVE NGOUONGO & DJUKWE JOEL, both design engineers in fine arts and heritage sciences (museology - museography - tourism), who deal with research and documentation.
