Coop la Maison Verte

Show some love for another sixteen years of the Coop!

About the project

The Co-op la Maison Verte is a 16-year-old multi-stakeholder or solidarity cooperative, an eco-épicerie, a community café and a neighborhood meet-up space in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. We partner with small local farms and producers for a variety of initiatives, including a three-times-weekly farmer's market in front of our store and CSA baskets for meats, baked goods and fresh produce. We're reaching out to our nearly 12,000 members, our neighbours and our friends to raise funds to rebuild our inventory and get even more of the local, eco-friendly, organic products our members love back on the shelves.

Maybe you just moved to NDG and, out of nowhere, fell in love with the warmly-lit café you saw through the windows. Maybe your kid dragged you in two years ago to play with the red plastic shovel she saw in the kid’s corner. Maybe you come in, helmet on, after riding your bike five kilometers to fill your own containers with dish soap or basmati rice. Maybe you’ve been coming in for ten years because this is where you’ve met so many of your neighbors sitting at the counter.

Whatever the reason you come in, we’re so glad you do.

The Co-op la Maison Verte was founded in the aftermath of the 1998 ice storm. Its founders were inspired by the solidarity they saw in their neighbors during those cold and uncertain times. The store opened its doors in 2000 and since then we've served more than 13,000 cups of coffee, sold more than 50,000L of soap in bulk (removing 20,000 plastic bottles from the waste chain!) and welcomed aboard nearly 12,000 members.

What are the funds for?

What some of our members might not know is that we suffered a huge financial setback in 2015, one that hit us with the same ferocity as the ice storm that united our community 17 years prior. We were able to reduce our operating costs to help carry the load, but our inventory has never been the same. Now we’re reaching out to the same spirit of solidarity that created the Co-op in order to raise an ambitious goal of $18,000 to rebuild our inventory and make the Co-op even stronger.

Let’s help the Co-op get a second wind, together. We want more than anything to keep being the place you go when you want to celebrate an achievement with a brownie and a latté, pick up affordable organic ingredients for the best soup you’ve ever made, or simply wait out the rain with a good book and someone nice to chat with at the counter.
