About

This project explores noticeable buildings in Riga, Latvia. Four water towers, built during 1896-1912, are located on the hills, close to the cemeteries. If you connect them with the invisible lines on a map you get an almost isosceles triangle that creates an area which is said to be a Latvian Olympus inhabited by more than 20 folkloric creatures and souls of dead ancestors. Another legend says that this is an occult triangle - Masonic symbol of wisdom.

In the apex of the triangle are the two towers on Mazā Matisa street. These bare the names of two sisters, Anna and Jeanne. It is told that Anna was a young woman executed for witchcraft, but Jeanne had committed suicide soon after. In the place their ashes where scattered, two identical towers now stand.

The place itself is not obvious but with its occult history. At the moment of construction of the towers, Mathis Cemetery was located right behind - last resting place for poor and suicides. And the natural sandy hill centuries ago served as a place for the executions of witches. It is not surprising that these water towers have an ill fame. People who work here often hear strange noises, and sometimes they see peculiar things...

What are the funds for?

I've started this project last summer and now I want to go back to Riga and to finish the story.

After that I want to publish a book with Blurb.

So I need financial help for some travel expenses as well as for the photographic materials.

Thank you!

About the project owner

Photography has been my passion for many years. As a child I would spend hours with his father in a darkroom printing photos. At school time I was photographing local music and cultural events for a music web site.
I am a participant of several joint exhibitions in Latvia and Russia and also a two time participant of The International Summer School of Photography (ISSP) that takes place yearly in Ludza, Latgale (East of Latvia), during which I was attending Black and White Analog Photography workshop and Photojournalism and Print Media workshops led by photography professionals of international standing. My diligence and photographs exposed in the school have been recognized not only by the teachers and students of the school, but also by Latvian largest newspaper Diena.
Originally from Riga (Latvia), I am currently studying Press & Editorial Photography at Falmouth University College in Cornwall, United Kingdom.
