About
Twice Out Of Paradise is a dance performance which uses both artistic and technical experimentation, such as an eco-light reserch, in an attempt to understand how humans relate to the idea of a perfect society in the context of climate change and related environmental issues.
Twice Out Of Paradise received the support of the 104 (104.fr), a prestigious cultural institution created by the City of Paris, in the form of a Residency that starts at the end of June. A highly commited team (8-10 persons) of top level dancers, musiciens, and lighting designers have accepted to participate in the project, and the residency represents a unique opportunity to present my work to key players and leaders in the performing arts.
Although I am fundraising and working to secure partnerships with corporate sponsors to support the project, I need your help for this critical testing phase.
The performance will be presented outdoors, at dusk, and will use both the light of the day and the darkness of the night. The innovative aspects of this performance include experimentating with alternative energy and low energy light technologies (in contrast with conventional stage lighting design) while maintaining a high level of aesthetics and artistic creativity. The light research is done in partnership with PhoScope, a New York-based think tank. (phoscope.org).

What are the funds for?
The funds will serve:
1) to buy lights (portable lights sources and accessories such as filters, optics, batteries and solar charger) and materials (reflective fabrics and phosphorescent powders) for the light tests
2) to cover travel expenses (RT train ticket Brussels- Paris) for one dancer from out-of-town who will participate in the residence @ 104.
About the project owner
I am a "choreographer-artist - slash- sustainability consultant" -the latter for international organizations and global companies on issues such as fairtrade, climate change, child labor and sustainable consumption.
TOOP arose from an artistic project I launched for the Copenhagen Summit in 2009 : “The Man with a Dove”, based on a novel by Romain Gary that features the United Nations in the 50s.
I believe I developed a unique model to create artistic work while experimenting technological ideas that could lead to solutions that can be shared outside the artistic world.
For instance, among the questions raised, we ask how one can create sophisticated lighting design for the dance stage without using non-renewable electricity. Anticipated outcomes include artistic off-grid lighting solutions for underserved communities.
TOOP received preliminary support from the European Foundation for Jewish Culture in 2009, and was otherwise self-funded. The 104 will provide in-kind services (production and technical support), and office and rehearsal space for three weeks.
Our next steps will be a workshop and presentation in October in the context of N'djamena (Chad).
