Thea - Swing for people with a disability

The Thea swing is a product that emerged out of a school project called Design 4 Everyone (D4E1). We got the chance to develop a product for one particular person with a handicap. This is where we met Thea, a little girl with the syndrome of Rett. Because of the syndrome, she has mild balance problems, therefore it wasn’t safe for her to swing.

The Thea swingbag is a young, mobile and innovative product designed for children and adults with a mild balance problem.

Mobility

Thea is the only mobile swingbag for people with a disability; and because it fits on every ordinary swing, it’s possible to take it everywhere. As long you have a swing set in the neighborhood you're ready to swing. The Thea swingbag is compact to carry with you and easy to use: just roll the swingbag open and connect it to the board of the swing.

Ergonomics

The Thea swingbag doesn't focus on the user alone, it also helps the caretaker getting the child in and out of the swing. This releases a lot of work from the caretakers' hands, and makes the swinging fun for them too.

Safety 

With the Thea swingbag, you are given the possibility to experience swinging with full freedom. Other disability-designs strap the child into static swings, the Thea swingbag is designed to keep the freedom of swinging. It provides a comfortable sitting position: the tilt back position makes sure that the feet are at all time off the ground, making sure that the child is secure while swinging. The extra ribbons on the side give the parents the possibility to control the swing constantly, giving the chance to keep eye contact while swinging.

Durability 

We choose materials that already have proven there resistibility in existing outdoor product, ready to stay reliable in all weather conditions. Because of the mobility it is possible to store the swing on a safe and dry place when not in use. The design gives the chance to grow with the swing.
