My project is a comic book, which I will create this summer. I want to co-create the book by inviting friends and supporters to contribute ideas for me to draw about.
Why is it called "What's the future like, mum?"
Well, the question comes from my little daughters. I'm a mum of twin girls, also an architect and entrepreneur. I draw comics whenever I have time. I am passionately curious about how computers are changing our lives, and our world.
This summer I will be going to NASA Silicon Valley to attend a course all about new technologies. Things like solar powered robots, artificial intelligence, wind turbines that make clean water in the desert... It's going to be an amazing experience, with some of the world's most amazing people, and I'll log it with a sketch comic diary.
I'll publish some of the sketches online each week and ask my friends to send me their questions about the future, their ideas, what inspires them, what frightens them.
When I return to London in September I will compile the sketches into a book! Publish it and send it out to all my lovely supporters.
I hope it will be a fun project and that people will get inspired and involved. Thanks for supporting!
What are the funds for?
Your generous pledge will cover the cost of printing the books and replenishing my art supplies: pens, paper, Caran D'Ache pencils, printer cartridges. All the other costs - my trip to NASA, course fees, accommodation etc - I've paid for myself. If there is any money left over after printing and materials, I'd love to buy an A3 printer-scanner. The ones I'm using are ten years old, noisy and slow. Even worse, they are *beige* >:[
I have set a low project budget as I will use a print-on-demand service with no minimum print run. I would really hope to pre-sell more than 32 books ... but we'll see! Tell your friends!
Most of all, please do get involved with the project this summer, give me feedback as I post new pictures, send me your ideas and questions. What inspires you about the future? What scares you? Have you seen a great quote about the future I should include? Please, send it to me. I'll try to include as many of your ideas as I can in the final 'co-created' comic.
