« Death frees you. Life enslaves you.
I don’t know who they are; I don’t know what they are looking for,
But they live as they like and feel all these emotions that I reject.”
The Vivid Abyss is a short film about some kind of love, the one that can be found in some young couples – a selfish love, a fake love, a possessive love, a dead love.
The Vivid Abyss tells the story of one of these couples destroyed by the impossibility to understand each other. It shows Ivan, a young man seeking a new love, imaginary or real, that could give him back the quietness, and fulfill the dark void that inhabits his heart, torn apart by an opposition against himself.
Where this project does comes from?
I arrived in Paris with the desire to participate in different film projects, benevolent or not, and at the same time I would prepare a trip to the East, with my own film project in mind.
One day I met a friend, a photographer, to talk about the possibility to work in Paris. He suggested that I take advantage of my three months in Paris by “making something”…
That enlightened me! “Why didn’t I think about it before?” The idea of making a short film in France and in the same language as the Bresson films instantaneously appealed to me.
So, with two comedians and my camera at my disposal, I started to ruminate on a subject.
I had to find something interesting but simple. I talked to young filmmakers, I read short tales, I consulted my notes, looked at photographs…I thought a lot, and I wrote some draft: a Chilean son of expatriate, a frustrated young comedian, a playboy angel…nothing worthy…”look for the final turning point”, a friend told me, “if you find that, you´ve got the film”.
It was supposed to be something easy but I couldn’t find the subject, and the shooting day was already coming closer.
Searching through my computer notes I found a document entitled “The Couple.” It was a draft of a script, written in one afternoon during my last relationship, a few days before the brake-up. Subsequently I read it, and I shouted “Eureka!” I had finally found the subject. Afterward I started to work intensely. Two days later, the script was ready to be read and to receive commentaries and suggestions. I sent it to my filmmaker friends. Meanwhile I started to contact people around in order to form the crew. A few days later, I put an announcement on the web and the team work started…the re-writings, the meetings, the castings…
The low budget film that I was suppose to make started to become more and more ambitious, growing along with the engagement and dedication of the people surrounding the project.
The fact of putting into images such an intimate subject was also part of the motivation as I saw it as an attempt of subliming the experience through an act of exteriorization—revealing a little secret that would have preferred to remain hidden.
What is the topic?
At the beginning I would have said that the topic is the impossibility to love sincerely. Now, I would rather say that the topic is the condition of ignorance in which some men and women find themselves when faced with the problem of love.
What’s the story?
Ivan and Gladia try to put an end to their relationship with a game of caresses and reproaches that seem to come from Ivan’s dark fantasies.
Ivan’s attitude is ambivalent—attracted by the rejection, he fluctuates between the hate and the hope of healing the relationship. In spite of everything, Ivan proves to be incapable to decide himself, even if the proximity of the end results in some kind of sincerity.
But Gladia, viscerally affected, is able after all to put an end to relation.
Artistic influences and cinematography references:
When thinking about the influences for the film, two authors came immediately to mind.
The ways in which Ivan expresses himself are reminiscent of the cruel frentic manners of some writings of Artaud.
And the ambiance, focused on the intense afflictions bearing down on the couple, made me think on several films by Bergman.
Hour of the Wolf
In relation to the image, I decided to work with clarity and softness as a means to harmonize with the darkness and hardness that emanates from the characters. These types of counterbalancing methods are also found in films such as The Anxiety of Veronica Voss by Fassbinder, and Ordet and Gertrud by C.Th. Dreyer.
The Anxiety of Veronica Voss
What are the funds for?
We are currently seeking additional finance for the post-production of the film, which includes:
- renting a 5.1 sound mixing studio
- the remuneration of the editor
- the costs for format conversion (.r3d) and color correction
- the costs of marketing the film
- the costs of DVD editing, copying and distribution
About the project owner
My different art manifestations have reflected my interest—almost to the point of obsession—in death, sex, the lie, the mystery, and the different negative states of mind; always in relation with an opposite desire of freedom, comprehension and spiritual transcendence.
As seen in El Círculo Purgativo (The Purgative Circle)—a short film in black and white—the protagonist must live his death over and over because of a sin he cannot purge (the gluttony for knowledge that sickened him ). And in Pedro Rios—based on the memoires of Pierre Rivière—the main character, after committing a murder, wonders through villages and forests trapped by the doubt and the remorse.
