◆ Jokko[FabLab] seeks to promote digital fabrication tools towards senegalse project owners, through a transverse workshop called "FabLab".

What is a "FabLab" exactly...?

Litteral association of "fabrication" + "laboratory" the concept of FabLab was invented by MIT researcher Neil Gersenfeld. The core idea of a FabLab is to gather in the same place all the tools to make a project, form the idea to the prototype: digital fabrication machines, electronic equipment, materials, construction softwares. A FabLab is to be democratic and open to the larger public, and thus can have a deep impact on local economy and social innovation. Since 2000, FabLabs have been set up all over the world in various contexts, addressing local problematics, needs, and conditions.

Our project: a FabLab in Dakar.

Digital innovation is expanding in Senegal. Numbers of local initiatives, start-ups, NGOs and associations use Web 2.0 ressources to accelerate this phenomenon. A FabLab is a place to make ideas come to reality, through design, experimentation and technologies. It's also a place to learn, and put various tools in the projects owners hands. It's a place to share knowledge, "connect the dotts", and scale up the projects. It's finally a flace to relay existing ressources in local industries, crafts, and arts.

◆ Jokko[FabLab] is a 5 months research project to prepare the creation of a FabLab within JokkoLabs, an entrepreneurship incubator and co-working space in Dakar. Our goal is to define with local stake-holders and project owners the ideal profile and "shape" for the future FabLab: how will it work, with what kind of tools, materials, and energy, and to address which problematics? Based on design approach and methods, this research aims at engaging the "co-production process" of a place dedicated to co-production.

What are the funds for?

The present funds will be use to enable the collaboration between JokkoLabs' future FabLab and parisian design school ENSCI-Les Ateliers, which already has a functionnal FabLab. A team of 3 students will be in charge of the project between Paris and Dakar. The underlying question being: as FabLabs are an international network, could we use an existing FabLab to "incubate" another one, somewhere in the world?

• phase 1: collaborative field research (feb 2012).

- 3 tickets Paris-Dakar = 3x550 €

- a place to stay in Dakar for 3 persons for 1 month = 300 €

- tools = 200 €.

• phase 2: développing pilote projects (april 2012).

- 3 tickets Paris-Dakar (+ Dakar-Paris) = 3x550 €

- a place to stay Dakar for 3 persons pour 2 weeks = 150 €

- materials / tools ± 200 €

TOTAL = 4150 €

◆ Funded in 2010 by Karim Sy, JokkoLabs is defined as an "action-tank", a laboratory oriented towards practical projects. JokkoLabs supports a learning community of entrepreneurs and digital innovators, seeking social change and innovation. It is also the first co-working space in Western Africa.

◆ Currently finishing her studies at l'ENSCI-Les Ateliers, Laura Pandelle is interessed in the mediation role of design in participative and local projects, as well as in the use of design in ethnographic research. Collaborations with the think-tank FING, the territorial innovation lab "la 27° Région" and London based design research agency STBY.
